چکیده

In this paper we present results from a new two-dimensional numerical relativity code used to study the interaction of gravitational waves with a black hole. The initial data correspond to a single black hole superimposed with time-symmetric gravita-tional waves (Brill waves). A gauge invariant method is presented for extracting the gravitational waves from the numerically generated spacetime. We show that the interaction between the gravitational wave and the black hole excites the quasinor-mal modes of the black hole. An extensive comparison of these results is made to black hole perturbation theory. For low amplitude initial gravitational waves, we nd excellent agreement between the theoretically predicted`= 2 and`= 4 waveforms and the waveforms generated by the code. Additionally, a code test is performed wherein the propagation of the wave on the black hole background is compared to the evolution predicted by perturbation theory.

Gauge-invariant Non-spherical Metric Perturbations of Schwarzschild Black-Hole Spacetimes

The theory of gauge-invariant non-spherical metric perturbations of Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes is now well established. Yet, as different notations and conventions have been used throughout the years, the literature on the subject is often confusing and sometimes confused. The purpose of this paper is to review and collect the relevant expressions related to the Regge-Wheeler and Zeril...

On the Eccentricity Distribution of Coalescing Black Hole Binaries Driven by the Kozai Mechanism in Globular Clusters

In a globular cluster, hierarchical triple black hole systems can be produced through binary-binary interaction. It has been proposed recently that the Kozai mechanism could drive the inner binary of the triple system to merge before it is interrupted by interactions with other field stars. We investigate qualitatively and numerically the evolution of the eccentricities in these binaries under ...

Propagation of vacuum polarized photons in topological black hole spacetimes

The one-loop effective action for QED in curved spacetime contains equivalence principle violating interactions between the electromagnetic field and the spacetime curvature. These interactions lead to the dependence of photon velocity on the motion and polarization directions. In this paper we investigate the gravitational analogue to the electromagnetic birefringence phenomenon in the static ...

Evolution of binary black-hole spacetimes.

We describe early success in the evolution of binary black-hole spacetimes with a numerical code based on a generalization of harmonic coordinates. Indications are that with sufficient resolution this scheme is capable of evolving binary systems for enough time to extract information about the orbit, merger, and gravitational waves emitted during the event. As an example we show results from th...

Binary Black Hole Mergers in 3d Numerical Relativity

While the binary black hole problem is essentially unsolved, there have been many advances in our understanding of the general relativistic evolution problem. The situation of interest is how two black holes orbit each other, spiral inwards, eventually merge, and emit gravitational waves in the process. Gravitational wave detectors are being built that eventually will detect waves from such sou...
